History:

One thing to note about Marin Asagi’s life: If it can get worse, it will get worse.

As a baby Marin was left on the doorstep of the Nagaya, a home that was relatively poor, and was taken in by all the kind residents inside. Over the years she grew up well, and brought lots of love and laughter into their lives. As she grew older, she decided to start taking odd jobs, like newspaper delivery, in order to help pay for her own expenses.

In 1969, when Marin was 13, something extremely strange happened: Their sky suddenly disappeared and was replaced with a massive image of another world. Like a mirage. It was strange how this occurred shortly after her meeting with the odd green cat, who she would later find out was named Lolo. This image was Brigadoon, a world that was completely different from her own. This was all well and good, and it would have been nice if that hadn’t affected her at all. But when a thing fell from the sky and through the roof of her home, it marked the start of a long and painful adventure. Marin tried to outrun the monster as it chased her, and it was by chance that she found Melan’s ampoule. Melan defended her bravely, slaying the monomakia in the process. He told her that the world simmering above them was called Brigadoon, and that was where all the monsters were coming from.

Marin with Melan returned from the fight, much to the relief of the residents of the Nagaya. She introduced Melan to them, and they happily accept him into their lives, since he protected Marin so fiercely. Things get off to a rocky start when Marin was picked on by two of her classmates. Melan perceived this as a threat and fired his gun at them, much to Marin’s distress. Later, after a visit from Lolo, Marin was attacked by three Monomokia known as Combat Monomakia. Luckily for her, she had Melan on hand, and was able to summon him to take take them out.

Marin’s connection to the monsters and Melan didn’t go unnoticed. Her classmates wanted to know exactly what it was. The classroom bullies corner her and demanded to know the truth, but this confrontation ended with Moe (Marin’s closest friend) getting injured and Marin going ballistic on them because of that. It’s here that she met Midori, a 9th grader. The bullies weren’t finished however, and continued harassing Marin until she gave in and let Melan out of his ampoule. Much to her horror, he took the bullies far too seriously, and went on a rampage, chasing them through the school until they finally collapsed in terror. She told Melan that she truly didn’t want to dislike him... but he was making it hard.

After the events at school, Marin was reluctant to go the next day. What would everyone think? Her very presence there was feared and despised. All because of Melan. After her grandmother left, she went for a walk outside in the rain to clear her head, leaving Melan’s ampoule behind. On her way to the pond, she encountered a strange green-haired boy. After wonder if he was a time-traveller from the future, he wandered off, leaving her with an umbrella. Marin then made her way down to the pond and met up with Midori, who was playing hooky also, and the two of them had a talk about friendship. Their conversation was eventually interrupted by a giant disgusting flying blob monster that rose from the pond. Unfortunately for Marin, she left Melan at home! Through the brave devotion of her friend Moe, Marin was eventually reunited with Melan, and they defeated Hyudol, the liquid monomakia by dehydrating him with desiccant.

Slightly happier with life, Marin decided to return to school, only to find it a completely hostile environment. No one wanted to risk having her around. She was eventually summoned to the office so she could talk with two detectives who wanted to ask her a few questions. This was understandable, given recent events, so she agreed to go along with it, even agreeing to let them take Melan. Meanwhile, Marin was being hunted by a slightly different kind of monomakia: A tiny snail-like creature that was capable of powerful sniper blasts. While she was in the police car, the sniper monomakia took a shot at her and ended up damaging the car. Marin tried to get out, but one of the detectives grabbed a hold of her and reached for his pistol, but immediately let go when Melan showed him that his weapon was far bigger. It was here that Marin realized that these two detectives were shady characters.

Both Marin and Melan took off somewhere safer. For the first time, Marin decided to try to talk to Melan, to get to know him just a little bit better. She didn’t get too far with it, but she decided that Melan was definitely a person worth getting to know. Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of the police in the area, so she quickly had Melan get back into his ampoule and then made a run through the forest. Taking refuge in a library, she met up with that strange green-haired boy again. He introduced himself as Makoto Alo, but she cheerfully nicknamed him Aloma. It turned out Aloma was doing some research on the “Blue Knight”, a legend that started about a century beforehand. She quickly grabbed the book Aloma was reading and darted out of the library towards home.

Upon arriving, Marin’s overactive imagination came up with a scenario of her being surrounded by a bunch of heavily armed policemen. As it turned out, it wasn’t her usual daydream, and she really was completely surrounded. The Detective that had almost pulled a pistol on her earlier was there, and demanded that she surrender. Despite the best effort of everyone in the Nagaya, Marin agreed to go along peacefully, just so they would all leave her family alone. Once there, she was immediately questioned about her lack of biological family, her connection to monomakia, and about the world above. She told them the world was called Brigadoon, and that made them even more suspicious. The detective eventually resorted to grabbing Marin by the head and slamming her face down into the desk several times as he interrogated her. Keep in mind that Marin is 13.

Later she was tossed into a cell. Luckily for her, she was spotted by Midori, who was there for some reason she never elaborated on. After Marin was visited by Lolo, Midori busted her out using her keen street smarts, and her ability to swipe keys from the police. Marin refused to leave without Melan, so the two of them made their way down to storage in order to collect him. Things could never be easy though, as ANOTHER Guns-swordsman like Melan appeared while they were searching for Melan. Turned out, this monomakia was named Pyon, and was looking for Melan too. Believing that Melan was a traitor, and intending to capture Marin, he challenged Melan to a fight, after realizing that their current location was far too crowded.

Marin was immediately against it. She had grown to care about Melan, and was frightened that he wouldn’t return. He made a promise to her that he would return, and she accepted it by putting her hairband around his sword. Later she made a tearful phonecall to Moe, saying that she was afraid for Melan, and that there was every chance he might die. Moe told her that she had to believe and trust in Melan. Marin took that advice to heart, and waited on the rooftops for Melan to return. He did return to her, and he was victorious, therefore keeping his promise. She told him that she was happy to see him, and so relieved that he was well, and it ended with a hug.

Time rolled by, and summer was eventually upon them. Much to Marin’s surprise, Melan suggested that they should go to the beach, despite the beach being miles away. It was not a problem if one could fly right? Marin is delighted with the suggestion, and was further excited when Melan suggested they take Moe along with them. Being unable to talk to Moe with permission (Moe’s mother didn’t like her all that much), the three of them make secret plans to sneak out during the night, when everyone was asleep. Things go well, as they were able to get away without incident, and they found the perfect beach for them to spend their evening on. With Melan’s help, they managed to build a campfire, and the two girls had fun while Melan watched. Melan sensed something amiss though, so he quickly excused himself to see what it was. Out in the ocean, he found another, terrifying monomakia: The natural resource mining monomakia. He was determined to take this out without letting it ruin Marin’s perfect evening.

Meanwhile, Marin followed Lolo into a cave while Moe followed, and came across another ampoule, much like Melan’s. The shockwaves from Melan’s battle with the monomakia cause the cave to collapse, but she and Moe were saved when she activated the monomakia inside the ampoule, releasing Poikun, the Transport Monomakia. By riding inside him, they were able to get to safety. Marin remained completely unaware of Melan’s battle, and as a result didn’t know about the injury Melan had on his back.

Later that summer, the two girls decide to go check out the baths, as Moe had never been to one before. They are attacked by a pink spider bubble lady who was eventually defeated by Melan. Everyone spent most of this episode naked.

Having won a trip for two to the Expo, Marin and her grandmother, Moto Asagi, head out for a day of fun. Things go well, and the two of them have a very good time. That was until Lolo showed up, indicating to Marin that something was about to happen. As it turned out, three of the buildings turned into monsters, and started attacking the Expo. Those who got sucked inside them instantly died in the bubbling pit of acid it had inside of them. Marin, realizing that this was too much for Melan to handle, desperately tried to search for that golden ampoule that she had spotted earlier when she followed Lolo. It turned out to be another Monomakia, Kushatohn, the Combat Monomakia. Being massive and powerful, Kushatohn easily defeated all three of monstrous buildings, and later fueled herself up again by drinking water. Despite the damage done to the park, Marin happily ended the day taking a bath. When she left the bathroom to talk to her grandmother, she was horrified to discover that Moto Asagi had passed away while they were talking.

The world had gone bleak and grey for Marin. Everyone at the Nagaya attended the funeral of Moto Asagi, and questions about Marin’s future were raised. What would she do now that she had no legal guardian? Marin was in no state to think about that though. She blamed herself for her grandmother’s death. She should have stopped when Moto said she was tired. It was the stress caused by the monomakia attacking that caused Moto to die.

Marin’s teacher made a visit, and told her that Marin could go somewhere else, an orphanage, and not bother the people in the Nagaya. She said Marin would be better off there, and the teacher sincerely believed it. Marin couldn’t take it anymore, so she ran out into the pouring rain to get away. Moe caught up to her, and offered to help pay for Marin’s expenses. If Marin had money, then Marin could stay at the Nagaya and keep going to the same school right? Marin tearfully rejected Moe’s money, saying that she wasn’t her pet, and that she didn’t want to be friends with Moe for the money. Marin ran off, leaving a sobbing Moe behind. Marin wandered about in the rain, and at one point she slipped and fell into deep water. She couldn’t summon up the will to keep going, so allowed herself to drift deeper into the pond. In her mind, she felt she was better off dead. Melan, sensing danger, left his ampoule and pulled her out of the water. He told her that through her, he understood the pain of loneliness. Feeling saddened, but comforted, Marin hugged him and asked him to stay with her, so they could both ease their loneliness.

Depressed and feeling a little lifeless, Marin rose the next day and went about her business. To her surprise, she came across a strange, scary-looking woman inside her own home. The woman explained that she was at the Expo with her daughter, and that her daughter died when the buildings attacked. Driven insane by grief, the woman tracked down Marin to ask her why she went to the Expo when she knew there were dangerous things after her. Marin had no answer. The woman then attacked her, trying to strangle the poor girl to death. Luckily for Marin, Midori was nearby and was able to yank the woman off of her. The woman runs off, and Marin bleakly recovers from the attack. As far as she was concerned, she deserved it, no matter what Midori tried to tell her. It was all her fault that people hated her so much that they wanted to kill her. One thing that Midori said that struck home though, was that Moto wanted Marin to be happy.

While talking to Melan, they were visited, once again, by Lolo. It was here that we get a formal introduction to Lolo, Brigadoon’s Chairman of the Life Improvement Committee. Lolo told Marin that they should go to Brigadoon, so that she could fulfill her duty as Creis. For that though, they’d need her to be in her own ampoule... which they realized they didn’t know where it was. Before they could continue with this, two special agents arrived and let her know that the President of the United States wanted to speak to Marin.

Wary, but curious, Marin went with them while Melan kept watch. The President was a kindly man, and Marin exchanged a few words with him before he told her his plan. After hearing it, she decided to go along with it. The plan was for her to go along with Neil Armstrong and the other astronauts to Brigadoon via rocket. This was a very dangerous journey, as no one knew what lay in Brigadoon, nor if they would even successfully get there at all. Marin was determined though, and took Melan, Poikun, and Kushatohn in their ampoules along with her.

After much ceremony, the rocket took off with Marin and the astronauts inside. They planned their entry into Brigadoon by entering at the exact moment mutual collapse happened. (Mutual collapse was the event of one world violently entering the other, usually dumping large amounts of dirt and other things into each other). To everyone’s delight, they DO make it through... the only problem is that they apparently landed in the middle of a marshmallow ocean. Okay. Marin was saved by Melan, but they didn’t have time to save the others as the unfortunate men sunk into the sticky white depths.

Time was of the essence, and they all knew it. Together, Melan and Marin zoomed towards their destination: Brigadoon’s core. It would be there that Marin would do the Pasca Ritual, which was her duty as the Creis. This was not going to be an easy task however, as everything monomakia and their mother was determined to stop them. First Melan and Marin left Kushatohn to fight the other combat Monomakia that tried to stop them. Second was Poikun, who gave himself up so that Marin could get to safety. That just left Marin and Melan... until Pyon appeared. Melan faced him in battle, telling Marin that she had to get to the center herself and complete the ritual.

She got to the center and got inside the hole like she was supposed to... but everything went wrong. The ritual rejected her and the core started to fall apart. Melan was both worried and confused, and he couldn’t understand why it didn’t work. He didn’t get a lot of time to ponder it though, since he was immediately attacked by Erin, another Gun-swordsman like himself. Gravely injured, he found himself unable to defend Marin, and it was by pure luck that the two of them managed to escape at all.

Marin and Melan wake up on a beautiful, unfamiliar beach. Well this was nice right? It was a very strange place, but there were no enemies around at all. This was Submaton Color, a world that existed outside Brigadoon and Earth. It was peaceful, and it allowed both of them, Melan especially, to recover from the recent traumatic events. While Melan steadily healed himself, the two of them explored the island, taking in the unusual sights and food that was everywhere. For the first time in a long time, they could relax. Curious about the tallest structure on the island, Melan and Marin start climbing the stairs leading up it, and they eventually came across Chroma, the Master of Submaton Color. Using his phone, they were able to contact Lolo, and Lolo revealed to them that Marin was NOT the true Creis... she just had the exact biological signature as the Creis, whose name was Marine. That was a great big whoops on his part.

As one could imagine, finding out that you have suffered so much for nothing was not an easy thing to work through. Marin was shocked, to say the least, and frightened that Melan would leave her to go look for the real Marine. Maybe she wasn’t as important to him as she thought? She told him that she wanted the two of them to stay here, in this peaceful world. They could be happy here, and no one would bother them. Melan pointed out that they couldn’t do that, and that he couldn’t abandon his duty. They had to keep going for Earth and Brigadoon. She asked him if she meant nothing to him, and he told her that no, she meant everything to him. He said that he needed her, and that being with her gave him a joy his duty couldn’t give him.

The two of them decide to depart Submaton Color and head back to Earth (The Funny World as those in Brigadoon call it). Before they go, Chroma gives Marin a necklace as a token of friendship. They say their farewells, and leave SC through a hole in the sea. They arrived on Earth, and Melan left Marin to search for the real Marine. Marin went home, hoping to find the comfort of her family. To her shock and horror, her home had burned down, and her family was nowhere to be found. Marin was on her own now.

Time travelled different between two worlds, and Marin quickly realized that she had been gone for months. During that time, the Mutual collapse had gotten worse. Thousands of homes were wiped out, and many homeless people were living in the schools and on the streets. Marin found her way to the school where she met a few old classmates. A couple of them blamed her for their suffering, and Marin ended up running away from them. Marin tried to find Moe, but was dismayed, then relieved, to find out that Moe had moved someplace safer.

Cold and miserable, Marin attempted to get some sleep by curling up under some newspaper with a bridge as protection from the snow. She didn’t manage to fall asleep though, as the deranged woman from earlier attacked her with a knife. Barely able to defend herself, Marin fought back desperately, and it was revealed that it was the woman who burned down the Nagaya. Marin was saved when a mutual collapse happened right over them, and partially buried the woman underneath some dirt. It was enough to allow Marin to escape.

Personality:

Marin is a cheerful, bubbly 14 year old who has the misfortune of being one of the unluckiest people in her universe. But despite her terrible luck, she still maintains a very optimistic and determined outlook on life. She can still enjoy things even when the world is going to hell around her. While generally bright and energetic, Marin shows a bit of a morbid side with her very overactive imagination, as she tends to daydream about scenarios in which she or someone else ends up dying. Marin has an abstract way of thinking, such as how she worries more about being on a ride she hasn’t paid for than the fact that a giant machine was trying to kill her. Another example is when the very first thing she asks her rescuer (Melan) if he saw her underwear.

Her life isn’t nice to her, and sometimes fighting through it isn’t possible for her to do on her own. Most orphans have the misfortune of growing up alone, but in this, at least, Marin did not have to suffer through (though she suffers through everything else later). Marin has a large (and poor) family who all love and care for her, even to the point of helping her escape from the police. The members of the Nagaya would do anything for her, and in return she would do anything for them. During the course of the series, Marin worries about the constantly, and feels as if her very presence puts them in danger.

Marin develops a very close relationship with Melan, the “Living Weapon” whose sole duty was to protect her. It’s hard not to like the person who stops you from dying slow and horrible deaths at the hands/claws/blades of many different kinds of monsters. She grew to like, and eventually love, him as a person, and in return for his protection she taught him about the simpler things in life. Like how to feel sadness and bonds with people. Before long, he was the most important person in her life.

Items on your character at canon point: The necklace she wears is called Cosmos. It’s a monomakia that allows her to change her shape to suit different situations. Upon entering the box, she doesn’t know what it is or what it does though.

Also she has a big pair of glasses. Those are important.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Abilities: None. She’s an ordinary 14-year-old human. She has been shown to be very physically fit, and has a strong ability to come up with a plan during battle, something Melan occasionally struggles with. She’s helped Melan many times over the course of the series by giving him pointers on which way to cut/shoot. School-wise, Marin isn’t a poor student. Her writing skills were good enough to win her award near the beginning of the series.

Strengths: Not many people can keep going despite all the emotional trauma the world deals to her. After dealing with the worst both worlds had to offer, Marin reacts much better to sudden and terrifying changes. Although she relies a lot on Melan, she has figured out by now that she can manage on her own reasonably fine.

Weaknesses: Marin has been through a lot, and there are times when it’s simply too much and she ends up snapping. Most of the time they’re quiet breakdowns, with her simply shutting off as she watches the world go on without her. During these phases, she’s quite willing to allow herself to drown if it meant not dealing with how terrifying life could be anymore. Maybe then she’ll be free of the constant guilt that plagues her.

Confronting Pyon

Prose Log Sample:

It’s gotten really hard to have a good night’s rest lately. Whenever she closed her eyes, she could see monsters baring down on her with their jaws wide open. Worse than that, she could hear the screams of all those who have died because she existed. She tried to tell them, over and over again, that she never meant for any of this to happen. She never wanted to hurt anyone, she never wanted anyone to die. Death was such a terrible thing, and she wouldn’t even wish it on her worst enemy.

That said, there have been times when Marin wished it on herself.

Maybe, part of her whispered, maybe everyone would be better off if she wasn’t there. Her beloved family wouldn’t have to suffer for her, and Melan…

Her Melan.

It was thoughts of Melan that usually calmed her. Even in her dreaming world did he protect her. He was strong, and powerful. He was brave and true. He was hers, and she loved him for the person he had grown into. For him, she would keep on smiling, and for her family she would keep on hoping. Life was pretty stupid always, but everything would get better eventually, right? After all this is done, she could grow up with her friend Moe and live their lives happily. It was Melan who convinced her that she deserved that much.

Eventually her dreams would become happy ones. Silly ones involving Lolo in a tutu, or Melan dancing the cancan. She always felt happy when she woke up from these sort of dreams, because it meant that she wasn’t totally miserable. Those happy dreams weren’t totally crushed out of existence.

She was Marin Asagi, adopted daughter of the Nagaya. Everyone there loved her and she loved them. She was a friend to beautiful, sweet Moe. Their friendship meant the world to her. Lastly, she was a friend to Melan, and would fight to protect him as fiercely as he fought to protect her. It didn’t matter how much the world seemed to hate her, these were all things that would never change.

All that mattered was that she had to keep going.
